I’ve got High Hopes for Fish & Bird

February 3, 2020 by 510foodie No Comments
It’s pretty neat to follow a restaurant on Instagram before they open.  You get a glimpse into what it takes to open a restaurant and you get to know the people behind the restaurant.  That is the feeling I had with Fish & Bird Sousaku Izakaya in Berkeley.  I was pretty excited for the restaurant...

One Ingredient Banana Ice Cream and Chocolate Syrup

February 1, 2020 by 510foodie No Comments
I used to give away my ripe bananas because I grew tired of making banana bread. Last year my friend told me I could make banana ice cream with just a ripe banana. I didn’t need an ice cream maker, just a food processor. I didn’t believe her. She told me to freeze the banana...

21 Day Vegan

January 26, 2020 by 510foodie No Comments
No meat. No dairy. No caffeine.  No alcohol. No processed food.  On January 2nd, I started a 21 day plant based cleanse.  I’ve never done a cleanse before.  I decided in December that I would do this to clear out all the “poison” in my body.  I was the heaviest I have ever been and...

I stumbled upon the recipe for butter mochi cake muffins from Snixy Kitchen when I was looking for a mochi muffin recipe. The recipe is easy to follow and so delicious. Recently I needed to bring something for a cookie exchange at work and thought about making these butter mochi cake muffins. I went straight...

Instant Pot Turkey Congee

December 1, 2019 by 510foodie Recipe rating:

When it comes to Thanksgiving leftovers, I always have turkey congee or turkey “jook” on my mind. Congee or “jook” is a Cantonese dish where rice is cooked down with liquid to form a thick porridge consistency. It is usually a breakfast or brunch item. Congee can take a few hours to make in a...

Behind Bay Grape and MAMA Oakland

November 24, 2019 by 510foodie No Comments
I am excited to write about a duo of Oakland businesses that I was introduced to this year.  One is a wine shop that has been around for over five years and one is a restaurant that opened up earlier this year.  Both are located within a block of each other on Grand Avenue in...

Ode to Kitchen Matriarchs

October 28, 2019 by 510foodie No Comments
I consider my grandmother the matriarch of our family when I was growing up.  I shared a bedroom with her and my sister.  Although my grandmother didn’t always get along with my dad, her son-in-law, she was very strong and held her own.  She was also a great cook that prepared most of our meals. ...

Clay pot rice with Chinese preserved meats

September 22, 2019 by 510foodie Recipe rating:

Many cultures cook with clay pots. I have owned my own clay pot for over twenty years. A few years ago, I broke one of the handles off of my clay pot and I was so mad at myself. I don’t use my clay pot often and it still functions, so I haven’t felt the...

Saturday Night at Abigail’s

September 16, 2019 by 510foodie No Comments
Last night my bookclub met at a Moroccan restaurant in Alameda that was super fun that I thought I would share.  I would call it a hidden gem because I have never driven southwest of Crab Cove in Alameda to an area called Ballena Bay where Abigail’s Moroccan Cuisine is located.  The sunset views are...

Côte de Bouef Prix Fixe Dinner at CDP Bar

August 11, 2019 by 510foodie No Comments
Although it has been almost two months since I had the Côte de Boeuf dinner at CDP Bar in Oakland, I remember it very well.  The meal itself was special, but it was also a special celebration of my best friend’s birthday.  CDP Bar is the cocktail lounge that connects to Commis, the Michelin 2-Star...
