Nopi: The Food Tour Stops in Oakland

November 1, 2015 by 510foodie No Comments
Last week I was in a room with Yottam Ottolenghi and I was giddy like a school girl. He was at Camino, Oakland with his coauthor Chef Ramael Scully promoting his new cookbook Nopi. I have only known about Ottolenghi for two years, but in the short time have become a big fan. I’ve eaten...

Drake’s Dealership: Oakland’s Hip New Place to Be

October 19, 2015 by 510foodie No Comments
Drake’s Dealership is a brand new restaurant in an old historic building located on Broadway Auto Row in Uptown Oakland. This is just one of many businesses that have begun development over the space of old car dealerships and a repair shop that together now call themselves “Hive Oakland”.      Drake’s Dealership is actually...

Ba Bite: Delicious Middle Eastern Bites

October 11, 2015 by 510foodie No Comments
Last Friday afternoon, my coworker pings me and tells me I should try Ba Bite on Piedmont Avenue. Whenever anyone gives me a recommendation, I start doing some research. I googled Ba Bite, found their website, and was immediately impressed. Yes, I was impressed by their website. The design is modern and clean with a...

Jack’s in Jack London Square

September 6, 2015 by 510foodie No Comments
As we near the end of summer, it’s best to take advantage of the perfect weather we have in Oakland. I love to eat outside and my favorite place to do that is in Jack London Square. When it’s warm, you may also be looking to eat something on the lighter side. Jack’s Oyster Bar...

Celebrating La Borinquena Mex-icatessen

August 2, 2015 by 510foodie No Comments
When I first heard that La Borinquena Mex-icatessen was closing after 71 years of business in Oakland, I felt a kind of sadness. La Borinquena is a Mexican restaurant with a cafeteria style setting. Tucked in the back of the restaurant, they have a little shop selling supplies such as spices and tortillas. In...

If I were a Vegetarian…Encuentro

July 26, 2015 by 510foodie No Comments
I started my food blog about five and a half years ago and my very first post was a recipe for farro salad. It was influenced by a dish I had at the vegan/vegetarian restaurant, Encuentro in Jack London Square. A lot has changed since then, including the restaurant moving to a new location less...

Taiwan Bento: Uptown Lunch Spot

June 21, 2015 by 510foodie No Comments
I remember walking by Taiwan Bento in the Uptown District of Oakland with a coworker many months ago. The restaurant was not open at the time and there was a sign at the door indicating they were having soft openings. I peaked through the window to check out their menu board. It was a very...

The Gourmet Backpacking Trip

June 14, 2015 by 510foodie No Comments
Backpacking has been something on my bucket list and my friends agreed to take me during the July 4 weekend. In preparation for it, we did a test run this weekend in the High Sierra. We began in the Mokelumne Wilderness on Saturday and made our way through Thornburg Canyon into the town of Markleeville...

Be Greek for a Day: Oakland Greek Festival

May 17, 2015 by 510foodie No Comments
This weekend is the Oakland Greek Festival, an annual festival held at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in the Oakland Hills.   I am embarrassed to say that this is my first year attending even though it’s been held in my hometown for 43 years!   If you look to the East and into the...
