A Little Piece of Thailand

May 16, 2011 by 510foodie No Comments
There is a Thai Buddhist Temple tucked in the City of Fremont that my sister-in-law frequents. Wat Buddhanusorn means “temple for the dedication of the buddha” and opened in 1983. It was built to promote Thai culture and art. Visits to the temple usually means Thai BBQ pork with sticky rice for me. This food...

Merritt Restaurant & Bakery: Another Oakland Tradition

May 8, 2011 by 510foodie No Comments
Merritt Restaurant & Bakery has been around for about sixty years. Most people that know it just call it “Merritt Bakery,” even though it is more than a bakery. They offer lottery ticket sales, all sorts of bakery items, homemade ice cream, a “to go” counter offering up their famous fried chicken, and finally old...

Got Lop Cheong?

May 1, 2011 by 510foodie No Comments
For the first two years of my life, I lived on Powell Street in San Francisco Chinatown.  San Francisco Chinatown is the oldest and largest Chinatown in North America.  When my family moved to Oakland, we still spent a significant amount of time there.  We would go there at least once a week so my...

Three Days in Indy, Three Sandwiches

April 24, 2011 by 510foodie No Comments
I had a couple of meals planned for my trip to Indianapolis.  I did some research ahead of time as well as emailed a couple of locals.  It was by total accident that I discovered Shapiro’s Deli.  A colleague of mine and I had taken a grounds tour of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and had...

Kwik Way Revival

April 17, 2011 by 510foodie No Comments
Tonight is the first time I stood in line at Kwik Way in Oakland’s Lakeshore District.  It took me 40 years to eat here.  This retro fast food burger joint first opened in the 1950’s.  Restaurateur Gary Rizzo is behind this revival and has made a number of changes.  They still have burgers, fries, and...

Coffee Oakland

April 10, 2011 by 510foodie No Comments
Coffee in the morning is a ritual that I cannot do without. When I’m not making my own nonfat latte with my espresso maker in the morning or having a cup at work, there are a few shops I like to frequent.  When I’m feeling like an Italian coffee, I go to Cafe 817 in...

Zero Zero Doesn’t Reflect a Rating

April 3, 2011 by 510foodie No Comments
Arriving early to a restaurant has its advantages.  As I waited for my Food Companion (FC) to arrive to Zero Zero in San Francisco, I perused the cocktail menu.  I immediately settled for the Pisco Sour remembering a similar drink at Restaurant Camino in Oakland that I enjoyed.  Pisco Sour is a cocktail containing pisco,...

Celebrating Nowruz: Persian New Year

March 27, 2011 by 510foodie No Comments
It is spring in California, but the weather hasn’t much resembled spring at all.  The only reason that I felt spring last week was the celebration of Nowruz or Persian New Year.  Nowruz is celebrated on the first day of spring every year and last Sunday I attended a Nowruz dinner. As a guest observing...

Corned Beef Hash: The Gourmet Way

March 20, 2011 by 510foodie No Comments
I always look forward to St.Patrick’s Day because I enjoy eating corned beef and cabbage.  But I look forward to the day after St. Patrick’s Day even more because I love corned beef hash.  It’s like making turkey pot pie or turkey porridge after Thanksgiving, but better.  If you remember reading my blog last year,...

Nashville Highlights: Part III

March 13, 2011 by 510foodie No Comments
While in Nashville, my BFF and I took a road trip to Lynchburg, Tennessee to take a tour of the Jack Daniel’s distillery.  She’s a Scotch drinker and had wanted to go.  I had read some reviews of the tour ahead of time and was looking forward to it.  The drive was a bit over...

About Me

Hello, my name is Lisa Lau.  Welcome to my new website 510foodie.com.  I was born and raised in the Bay Area. I am passionate about food and am here to share my food adventures with you.

I’ve been blogging about food for almost ten years.  I am a contributing writer for localwise.com where my blog post Top Five Bowls of Noodle Soup in Oakland went viral.  In 2018, I was a guest writer for Berkeleyside where I wrote the featured article  A Filipino Food Movement is Sweeping the East Bay.

My friends and family enjoy my cooking so new to the site is “Recipe of the month.”

I hope you enjoy the site!
