Archive I finally got a chance to dine at Hawker Fare this weekend. It’s been open for about five months. Hawker Fare is the second Oakland restaurant by Chef James Syhabout. His first restaurant is Commis. I have yet to try the only restaurant in Oakland that earned a Michelin star. I guess I’m waiting for...
I’m currently wrapping up my trip to San Antonio. My BFF and I head back to Austin in the morning. We’ve spent a day and a half touring the area and eating great food. This is my first time to San Antonio and I am surprised by how much I like it. The weather has...
If I lived in Seattle, I would have a lot to write about. My four days on holiday in Seattle were full of great places to eat. I could write about Russian Piroshki at Piroshky Piroshky, chowder at Pike Place Chowder, or one of the seven stops we made during our gourmet food tour by...
Last week a friend of mine and I took a four day trip to Seattle, Washington. They say August and September are the best months to visit. We had planned to see some Dale Chihuly art, watch a Mariners game, and eat, of course! Eat is what we did and we did it well. Seattle...
Last week I had the privilege to attend a tour of Oakland’s Food Industry. We spent the day visiting eight food businesses in Oakland which was a mixture of new and old. Stop #1: Hodo Soy Beanery Hodo Soy Beanery was founded in 2004 by Tofu Master Minh Tsai. Although I may have passed a...

Last weekend my book club, The Oakland Readers, celebrated our Ten Year Anniversary. We have read eighty-three books during this time. We tend to match our books to a food and/or event theme. For example, we had Chinese food when we discussed “The Bonesetter’s Daughter,” we went to Golden Gate Fields when we read “Seabiscuit,”...
Last week I was invited to spend a couple of days at the beautiful Carmel Valley Ranch in Carmel, California to celebrate a birthday. They describe the resort as a 500 acre playground. They have a variety of interesting activities. We even got to wear a “Bee Suit” and learn how honey is made. Speaking...
The Annual Festival of India in Fremont, California is held each year to celebrate Indian Independence Day. This two day festival occurred this past weekend and celebrated its nineteenth year with a cultural fair, a parade, and a banquet gala. Last year I had the privilege to attend the banquet gala. This past weekend my...
When people think ramen, the first thing that comes to mind is probably an instant bag of noodles that cost pennies. For Asians, it is comparable to Kraft macaroni and cheese as a college staple. I became introduced to restaurants that exclusively served bowls of ramen noodles living in Los Angeles in the mid 1990s....
