The Search is Over for Italian in Oakland

November 10, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
When I consider where to go for good Italian fare, Oakland doesn’t really come to mind, at least not until recently. Desco is a fairly new Italian restaurant in Old Oakland that replaced the short-lived Borgo. Desco has been open for a few months and I have gone twice, once for lunch and once for...

Kitchen 388 in the Oakland 510

October 6, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
There is a small restaurant located on Grand Avenue in Oakland that I have passed by hundreds of times in the past two years. Early on, I had heard good reviews about Kitchen 388. I had wanted to go there, but couldn’t figure out when they were open. It would appear open one day and...

Hurray for Afghan Food in Oakland

September 29, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
My book club recently read Khaled Hosseini’s book “And The Mountains Echoed” which partially takes place in Afghanistan. I was pleasantly surprised to find that we didn’t have to travel to get Afghani food for our meeting place. Kamdesh Afghan Kabob House located at 14th Street and Harrison near Oakland Chinatown opened about two years...

The Cronut Craze Moves to Oakland

September 8, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
The Cronut is a half croissant and half donut hybrid that was developed by Chef Dominique Ansel for his bakery in New York City. From my understanding, fans are lining up for four hours to buy a Cronut. It has become so popular that Chef Ansel trademarked the name and knockoffs of this pastry are...

In the Mood for Fried Chicken

July 28, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
I think I have mentioned that fried chicken is one of my favorite foods. I can be satisfied by inexpensive fast food fried chicken like Popeyes. I can also be happy ordering it in a fine dining restaurant for a pretty price such as Pican in Oakland. I have been spending a lot of time...

Cultivate Festival: Golden Gate Park

June 9, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
It was a warm day in Oakland yesterday. Around noon it was in the mid-70’s. Further east, it was going to hit triple digits. My friend asked if I wanted to go to the Cultivate Festival in San Francisco. “Sure!” I responded. Cultivate is a Festival sponsored by Chipotle that “brings together farmers, chefs, thought...

Homeroom: Home of Mac and Cheese

May 26, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
My last book club meeting was held at Homeroom in the Lake Temescal neighborhood of Oakland. We were looking for a place that serves comfort food, so Homeroom was a good choice as they specialize in one of the most comforting American foods…macaroni and cheese. Last year I sampled Homeroom’s garlic mac and cheese at...

The Ramen Shop: Making Ramen Trendy in Oakland

April 14, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
The Ramen Shop joins a long list of Oakland restaurants who’s chef owners trained in the Chez Panisse kitchen. Other restaurants/bakeries include Cosecha, Bakesale Betty, Oliveto, Boot and Shoe Service, Camino, and Pizzaiola. Last night my BFF and I arrived at the Ramen Shop for a late night meal. The restaurant has a cool vibe...

Nido: Adding Color and Flavor to Jack London Square

February 24, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
I love Mexican food. I love sustainable food. There aren’t too many restaurants that do both. My favorites for both have been Tamarindo and Cosecha in Oakland and Nopalito in San Francisco. I now have another to add to the list. Nido opened the latter part of 2012 in Jack London Square. Nido in Spanish...

The Forge Pizza located in Jack London Square in Oakland opened this past Tuesday. It was highly anticipated for me because I love pizza and I love Jack London Square. I checked it out on Friday after work with a group of friends. We got their early and got a nice comfortable booth to sit...
