OMG! I made macaroons!

August 4, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
My niece has been wanting to make French macaroons, or macarons all summer. My first reaction was “no way” because of the intimidation factor. On a recent episode of Master Chef, contestants had one hour to make macaroons. I finally agreed to help her after finding a recipe in my Thomas Keller cookbook. My favorite...

In the Mood for Fried Chicken

July 28, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
I think I have mentioned that fried chicken is one of my favorite foods. I can be satisfied by inexpensive fast food fried chicken like Popeyes. I can also be happy ordering it in a fine dining restaurant for a pretty price such as Pican in Oakland. I have been spending a lot of time...

Borinquen Soul: Not Just Another Food Truck

July 21, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
It was six years ago when I was in San Juan, Puerto Rico (PR) with my BFF. It was a great trip because we had friends that took us around and made us feel like locals. Those memories reappear when I am near the Borinquen Soul Food Truck. It’s a food truck straight out of...

Bun Mam Soc Trang: Vietnamese Done Right

July 14, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
I love the fact that Oakland has a fairly large Vietnamese community because I enjoy eating Vietnamese food. The cuisine varies so much, I usually can find something on the menu that will hit the spot. I recently was introduced to Bun Mam Soc Trang, a Vietnamese restaurant two miles south of me in East...

Aloha Alameda: Hang Ten Boiler

July 7, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
By following fellow foodie friends on Yelp, I can learn about places to eat that I may otherwise not know about. This is how I found out about Hang Ten Boiler (HTB) in Alameda. HTB serves two types of cuisine that initially may not sound like a good mix, but it provides options. HTB serves...

Taco Trucks: Two for One

June 30, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
You can find tons of taco trucks up and down International Boulevard in Oakland, but some that stick out are the ones from Taqueria Sinaloa. I went to Taqueria Sinaloa with a friend and my niece for a light lunch one Sunday afternoon. The north side of the parking lot has the truck that serves...

Fusebox: Thinking Outside the Box

June 23, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
Located in an Industrial area in West Oakland, Fusebox is a small Fusion restaurant with a blend of mostly Korean and Japanese foods. Fusebox is one of my BFF’s new favorite places and I found out why when I took her for a belated birthday dinner on Friday. We were first offered a couple of...

La Grande Orange: Pasadena

June 16, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
Last Sunday I was in Pasadena with a colleague. Ever since I discovered The Luggage Room Pizzeria, I have been dining there every time I am in the area. Housed in the same building at Pasadena’s Del Mar train station is La Grande Orange (LGO) Cafe. This visit I would try LGO. We were told...

Cultivate Festival: Golden Gate Park

June 9, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
It was a warm day in Oakland yesterday. Around noon it was in the mid-70’s. Further east, it was going to hit triple digits. My friend asked if I wanted to go to the Cultivate Festival in San Francisco. “Sure!” I responded. Cultivate is a Festival sponsored by Chipotle that “brings together farmers, chefs, thought...

Pizza and Curry = A-OK

June 2, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
Who would have thought to top a pizza with Indian curry? There is actually a name for it. It’s called Desi style. Pizza and Curry is a little hole in the wall in a strip mall in the City of Fremont that serves such a thing. My book club met for dinner this evening. Although...
