DIY: Chocolate Covered Strawberries

May 8, 2016 by 510foodie No Comments
Chocolate covered strawberries are a beautiful thing. They are elegant looking, taste really good, and so easy to make. You don’t even need any fancy equipment. I taught my niece how to make them a few years ago and she elevated them by adding detail. This recipe and instructions to make two dozen chocolate covered...

Exploring Fournée Bakery in Berkeley

May 1, 2016 by 510foodie No Comments
Located on Domingo Avenue in Berkeley across from the historical Claremont Hotel, is a small business community of food and shops. Tucked in this neighborhood is a French bakery serving some of the best croissants. It was about a year ago when my friend introduced me to Fournée Bakery when she brought me two croissants...

Duck Hunt: New King Restaurant

April 24, 2016 by 510foodie No Comments
The first thing you see when you walk into New King Restaurant (actually, entrance is from the back door via their parking lot) is a window display of roast meats including roast pork, BBQ pork, and roast ducks.   New King is located on one end of International Blvd., only a few blocks from Lake...

Italian Comfort: Lo Coco’s

April 18, 2016 by 510foodie No Comments
Restaurants in Oakland come and go and keeps me on my toes. There is a small Italian restaurant that sits on Piedmont Avenue in North Oakland that has been around for quite some time. Lo Coco’s is an authentic neighborhood restaurant that serves Sicilian style food.   A couple of weeks ago, I was craving...

New Lun Ting Cafe: An Ode to my Father

April 10, 2016 by 510foodie No Comments
I took some time off from writing for the past month after my father passed away. It was a much needed break. This post is dedicated to my dad who was born and raised in San Francisco. He was a product of San Francisco Chinatown. He worked and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. The...

New Orleans: Gulf Coast Oysters

March 6, 2016 by 510foodie No Comments
I just returned from a trip to New Orleans, Louisiana. I spent a previous trip to New Orleans discovering all the great places for beignets. Not intentionally, this trip seemed to have been focused on oysters. Not shrimp or crawfish, but oysters. Louisiana produces approximately a third of the country’s oysters. With so many restaurants...

Juhu Beach Club Revisited

February 28, 2016 by 510foodie No Comments
I typically don’t write about the same place twice, but since I’ve been writing for six years, I can see from time to time the need to revisit. Today I went to the Indian restaurant Juhu Beach Club (JBC) in Oakland for weekend brunch. (Read my previous post about Juhu Beach Club.) I convinced a friend...

Aztecali: My Latest Addiction

February 21, 2016 by 510foodie No Comments
It was Chef Dominica Rice of Cosecha posting a picture of three tacos on Instagram that brought me to Aztecali, a new Mexican restaurant in Oakland. If it’s good enough for Chez Panisse trained Chef Dominica, it’s definitely good enough for me. The owners Juana and Claudia opened up this small neighborhood establishment close to...

Look No Further to Find a Gem in Berkeley

February 14, 2016 by 510foodie No Comments
UC Berkeley students are pretty lucky because they are only a few blocks away from Little Gem Belgian Waffles. I heard about this place when it opened up last November for a soft opening, but only recently paid a visit. I took a friend with me who I consider my “Belgian Waffle” expert because she...

February 7, 2016 by 510foodie No Comments
My friends invited me to their family Chinese New Year celebration on Friday to close out the lunar year. I was available to attend as my family was not celebrating until Sunday. I gladly accepted and was excited about dining at Great China in Berkeley as it was on my list to try. They have...
