Outside Lands: Standout Food

August 19, 2012 by 510foodie No Comments
Last week was Outside Lands at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Outside Lands is a three day Music and Art Festival. For short I will refer to it as OSL. The event was in its fifth year and it was my first time. For the most part, I tend to avoid crowds of 60,000....

Aunt Mary’s Serves Up Breakfast

August 12, 2012 by 510foodie No Comments
During the episode of Master Chef when the contestants had to cook up eggs four different ways – poached, soft boiled, sunny side fried, and an omelet, I wanted to be a part of that. I’m pretty good at cooking up breakfast food, so I don’t tend to go out to eat breakfast very often....

The Big Oyster

August 5, 2012 by 510foodie No Comments
My BFF and I started the Oakland Readers Book Club eleven years ago. We recently read “The Big Oyster,” by Mark Kurlansky. “The Big Oyster” is a historical look at oysters in New York. It was my BFF’s book choice. I wasn’t surprised because oysters are one of her favorite foods. If you ever wanted...

Donut Savant: Fancy Holes

July 29, 2012 by 510foodie No Comments
A couple of months ago, my BFF brought me over a surprise. Fancy donut holes. What is more surprising is that it’s a new donut shop that opened up only three and a half blocks from my work. Donut Savant is in Uptown in Oakland. We shared a few holes. These bite sized treats tasted...

Say Aloha to Hawaiian Shaved Ice

July 22, 2012 by 510foodie No Comments
Last weekend I suggested a hike at Wildcat Canyon Regional Park in Richmond, California. My friends were skeptical at first, but gave in after a combination of the forecast for heat wave temperatures in the Bay Area (way cooler than hiking Mt. Diablo) and my offer to drive (they all have nice cars and wouldn’t...

Copper River Salmon: Sushi Sam’s

July 8, 2012 by 510foodie No Comments
My friends have been telling me about Sushi Sam’s Edomata in San Mateo for a few years. I like fresh sushi and will even drive to Rohnert Park (Hana) to get it. What finally sold me to go to Sam’s was Copper River Salmon. This is a seasonal salmon and it wasn’t going to be...

Goodbye Foie Gras, Hello Txoko

July 1, 2012 by 510foodie No Comments
Today is July 1, 2012 and in California, restaurants can no longer sell foie gras, fatty duck liver. The law was signed eight years ago by the then Governator. I’m sure he had his share of foie. On Friday night, a group of five us had something like a final farewell to foie. We dined...

Sunday Special

June 24, 2012 by 510foodie No Comments
After a nearly four hour hike to Mt. Tamalpais, my friends and I went to Sol Food in San Rafael. Yes, I have written about this Puerto Rican restaurant before, but we picked up food next door at Sol Food Bodega. You can order anything from the restaurant at the Bodega. My usual consists of...

Farewell to Foie

June 17, 2012 by 510foodie No Comments
There are only two weeks left before California bans foie gras forever. Foie gras is fattened duck or goose liver. The reason for the ban is the inhumane method of force feeding the ducks in order to fatten up the liver. This process makes for a rich, buttery delicacy. Last week a friend of mine...
