January 5, 2014 by 510foodie No Comments
Woo! Hoo! The 49ers had a victory today so they will play in the Divisional Playoffs next Sunday which makes the team that much closer to another Super Bowl. The BFF and I went to our neighborhood bar Easy Lounge on Lakeshore Avenue in Oakland to catch all the action. We were the first to...

Pass the Chicken, Hold the Service

December 15, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
Last month, a group of us went to Miss Ollie’s for lunch to celebrate our coworker’s birthday. Miss Ollie’s has been open for about a year and is part of the old Housewives Market in Old Oakland. The restaurant serves Caribbean food and it was the first visit for all five of us. We all...

It’s Cold: Time for Jook

December 8, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
As the temperature drops below freezing in parts of the Bay Area, I am always seeking something warm to eat. Rice porridge also known as congee and called “jook” in Chinese is something I love to eat when it is cold. The basic ingredients of jook is rice, water, and salt and it takes hours...

One Word: Marrow

November 24, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
It was a few years ago that my coworker took me to Alameda to visit a food cart that she often frequented. Jon’s Street Eats was the name. I still remember having the grilled asparagus with prosciutto, Parmesan cheese, and a soft boiled egg. Jon was a one man show and it was enjoyable to...

Lucky for Me, It’s Crab Season

November 17, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
Friday marked the official opening of Dungeness crab season in the Bay Area. I am very excited because I want to continue to cook my own crab. I steamed a live 2 pound Dungeness crab for the very first time about two weeks ago. At that time, it was probably the largest crab in the...

The Search is Over for Italian in Oakland

November 10, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
When I consider where to go for good Italian fare, Oakland doesn’t really come to mind, at least not until recently. Desco is a fairly new Italian restaurant in Old Oakland that replaced the short-lived Borgo. Desco has been open for a few months and I have gone twice, once for lunch and once for...

KoJa Kitchen: A food truck to follow

October 20, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
On one of my lunch time walks in Downtown Oakland, my colleague and I passed a few food trucks parked on 12th Street. I always get excited about food trucks, but this one particular truck caught my attention because of the large LCD monitors displaying their menu. KoJa Kitchen was the name. We didn’t plan...

Kitchen 388 in the Oakland 510

October 6, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
There is a small restaurant located on Grand Avenue in Oakland that I have passed by hundreds of times in the past two years. Early on, I had heard good reviews about Kitchen 388. I had wanted to go there, but couldn’t figure out when they were open. It would appear open one day and...

Hurray for Afghan Food in Oakland

September 29, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
My book club recently read Khaled Hosseini’s book “And The Mountains Echoed” which partially takes place in Afghanistan. I was pleasantly surprised to find that we didn’t have to travel to get Afghani food for our meeting place. Kamdesh Afghan Kabob House located at 14th Street and Harrison near Oakland Chinatown opened about two years...

The Cronut Craze Moves to Oakland

September 8, 2013 by 510foodie No Comments
The Cronut is a half croissant and half donut hybrid that was developed by Chef Dominique Ansel for his bakery in New York City. From my understanding, fans are lining up for four hours to buy a Cronut. It has become so popular that Chef Ansel trademarked the name and knockoffs of this pastry are...
